Backstreet Boys - 'Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely'

The third single from the Backstreet Boys’ 1999 album ‘Millenium’, “Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely” is one of their significant hits, second only to their first single “I Want It That Way” from the same album. It became one of the most successful singles of the boy-band. Released on 10th December 1999, the video to accompany the song was released on New Year’s Eve 1999 and reached number 3 on the UK Singles Chart and number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached number 3 on both Finland and Norway and number 2 in Sweden, the Netherlands, Switzerland and New Zealand.

The song also earned a Grammy award nomination during the 43rd Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. The music video to accompany the song was directed by Stuart Gosling in December 1999, in Los Angeles and follows each of the band members separately until the instrumental break and final choruses an, darker in tone than any of their previous releases, touches on several of the band’s real-life issues, such as the death of a loved one.

Show me the meaning of being lonely
So many words for the broken heart
It's hard to see in a crimson love
So hard to breathe
Walk with me, and maybe
Nights of light so soon become
Wild and free I could feel the sun
Your every wish will be done
They tell me
[Chorus:]
Show me the meaning of being lonely
Is this the feeling I need to walk with
Tell me why I can't be there where you are
There's something missing in my heart
Life goes on as it never ends
Eyes of stone observe the trends
They never say forever gaze upon me
Guilty roads to an endless love (endless love)
There's no control Are you with me now?
Your every wish will be done
They tell me
[Chorus]
There's nowhere to run I have no place to go
Surrender my heart, body, and soul
How can it be You're asking me
To feel the things you never show?
You are missing in my heart
Tell me why can't I be there where you are?
[Chorus]
